Senior Pet Month: Nutrition and Weight Management in Senior Pets

Senior Pet Nutrition and Weight Management

As our beloved pets grow older, their needs begin to change. Not just with exercise and sleep, but also in how their bodies use and process nutrients. Just like in people, metabolism slows down with age, muscle mass can decline and activity levels often reduce. This makes diet and weight management a crucial part of keeping senior pets healthy, comfortable and happy for as long as possible.

Why Nutrition Matters in Older Pets:

Good nutrition supports every aspect of your pet’s wellbeing, from healthy joints and strong muscles to a sharp mind and robust immune system. As pets age, however, their calorie requirements often decrease while their need for other nutrients increases. This means that senior pets can often gain weight on the same portion sizes they’ve always had. Finding the right balance therefore becomes essential.

How to Get Optimise Senior Pet Nutrition:

  1. Choose a Senior Diet – senior or mature diets are specifically formulated to support older bodies. They tend to have fewer calories, higher-quality protein to maintain lean muscle and added nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids for joint health and antioxidants for cognitive support.
  2. Watch Portion Sizes – even small overestimations can lead to gradual weight gain over time, see examples here. Use the feeding guide on the packaging as a starting point, but if you need further advice our team can help you calculate the exact portion your pet needs based on their weight, lifestyle and health.
  3. Monitor Body Condition – a healthy weight looks different for every breed, but you should be able to feel your pet’s ribs easily without pressing too hard, and see a gentle waistline from above. Our team can demonstrate how to check your pet’s body condition score during your next visit.
  4. Encourage Gentle Exercise – maintaining mobility with consistent, gentle exercise helps preserve muscle tone and joint flexibility. Short, regular walks or light play are ideal for older dogs, while cats benefit from short bursts of play with toys or food puzzles.

How We Can Help at Priory:

At Priory, we take a proactive approach to senior pet care. During health checks, our vets and nurses assess your pet’s weight, body condition and overall health and can recommend a diet that best suits their individual needs. We also offer weight clinics where our nursing team develop personalised weight management plans, track progress and provide ongoing support and advice. For Priory Pet Club members on our Complete Plan, unlimited vet and nurse checks are included on the plan so you don’t have to hesitate to come in for advice or reassurance.

We understand that every pet is different and some may need extra help maintaining a healthy body condition. Senior Pet Care Awareness Month is a great time to book a senior health check to discuss your pet’s needs with a member of our team. With the right senior pet nutrition, careful monitoring and veterinary support, we can ensure that their later years are as happy and healthy as possible.
