Transparency, Trust, and Thoughtful Care: Our Response to the CMA Report

You may have seen recent headlines about the veterinary sector and the Competition & Markets Authority’s report into pricing and transparency. At Priory Vets, we welcome this conversation  because pet owners deserve clarity, and they deserve care that’s personal, thoughtful, and rooted in clinical integrity.

About Us - Directors on the Grass with Dogs - Priory Vet Group

We understand that as a pet owner, you want one simple thing: your pet to lead a happy and healthy life,  and the peace of mind that you’re doing right by them. We share your goal.

As a proudly independent practice, owned and run by local vets who live and work in the Christchurch community, we make our own decisions- guided by what’s best for our patients, not by the interests of external investors.

We know that good value isn’t just about the price tag. It’s about care that’s tailored to your pet, delivered by a team who knows them, and who’s there when it matters – including out of hours! It’s about having the training and experience to offer a wide range of treatments in-house, reducing the stress and cost of referrals. And it’s about thoughtful decisions, made by vets who’ve got to know you and your pet over time.

We also know that finances aren’t always straightforward. That’s why we:

  • Offer clear cost estimates upfront.
  • Talk through all the options — including lower-cost alternatives or ways to phase care.
  • Explain medications and prescriptions, and why we recommend them.
  • Support you to make confident, well-informed decisions for your pet.

Veterinary care isn’t a one-size-fits-all service. Every animal, every situation, every diagnosis and procedure is different, and in our view, overlooking that risks compromising patient welfare.

Whilst we support the CMA’s focus on transparency, we’d encourage owners to look beyond the headline prices. Even a routine procedure, like a bitch spay, can vary widely in the standard of care. From tailored anaesthetic plans and advanced monitoring, to dedicated recovery nurses and carefully managed pain relief, there’s a great deal that goes on behind the scenes to ensure the best possible experience for your pet.

If you’re feeling unsure about your pet’s healthcare, please talk to us. We’re here to listen, to explain, and to support you in making confident, well-informed decisions — because you know your pet best. And because veterinary care that is personal, thoughtful, and led by vets who truly care, is worth it.
